One of Us is Lying, review

Hello loves!

Today I am back to working my way through my backlist reviews because my life has been super chaotic with blog tours and I also somehow read twelve books in January. Anyways, today we have a review for One of Us is Lying by Karen M.McManus which I was kindly gifted in a Secret Santa me and some bookish friends from TWR gang ran last year.

I currently own all of Karen M.McManus’ book, with all but my copy of The Cousins being physical copies and I think she is juicily becoming one of my favourite authors, and maybe even an auto buy author because she is just such an incredible writer!!

Onto my review…

Summary

The Breakfast Club meets Pretty Little LiarsOne of Us Is Lying is the story of what happens when five strangers walk into detention and only four walk out alive. Everyone is a suspect, and everyone has something to hide.

Pay close attention and you might solve this.

On Monday afternoon, five students at Bayview High walk into detention.
Bronwyn, the brain, is Yale-bound and never breaks a rule.
Addy, the beauty, is the picture-perfect homecoming princess.
Nate, the criminal, is already on probation for dealing.
Cooper, the athlete, is the all-star baseball pitcher.
And Simon, the outcast, is the creator of Bayview High’s notorious gossip app.

Only, Simon never makes it out of that classroom. Before the end of detention, Simon’s dead. And according to investigators, his death wasn’t an accident. On Monday, he died. But on Tuesday, he’d planned to post juicy reveals about all four of his high-profile classmates, which makes all four of them suspects in his murder. Or are they the perfect patsies for a killer who’s still on the loose?
Everyone has secrets, right? What really matters is how far you would go to protect them

Thoughts

OK, so even though this has been a little while coming I am still probably going to be gushing all about this book so I’m just going to warn you about that now because there is no way that I am going to be able to stop myself from doing it for long lol.

The best place to start this review is by talking about the main characters as they are the centre of the story. They are all so incredible and well written, from their first appearance in the detention when the death occurs to the end of the book once the case has been solved. I absolutely adored reading about them all and getting insight into not only their lives but also how they all dealt with the trauma of seeing someone die in front of their eyes at the start of the novel. The fact that we got to see all of their viewpoints throughout the entirety of the book and not just at different chapters made the book so much more interesting.

The plot which we got to see form all four perspectives was so wonderfully written and woven together. I was so engrossed in this book that I couldn’t put it down! So much so that I read most of it in one day because I was so desperate to get to the final reveal that every time I put it down I just kept getting drawn back to it, it just had such a magnetic pull and I couldn’t get out of it’s hold. The way it all came together definitely shocked me and I had to take ac couple minutes after I read the ending to firstly appreciate it’s mastery but also allow it to sink in. Karen M.McManus really understands how to write a thriller and I cannot wait to read another one of her books soon!!

And of course, there isn’t much to say about her writing that I haven’t already because of course her skill i writing is so tied up in the amazing plot and the wonderful characters that Karen M.McManus has created. I just cannot wait to see what else she can pull out of the bag in One of Us is Next, Two Can Keep a Secret and the new book she announced that is coming soon. I am very excited to keep discovering this amazing woman’s write and appreciating her as an author even more.

If you guys have not read any of her books then you should take this as a sign!

If you want to buy the book for yourself , which you should definitely do, then you can do so here (some links are affiliate)

  1. I was fascinated with how she tied everything up at the end of the book. I couldn’t believe it when I first read it, so cleverly written! Loved your review and I’m glad you enjoyed it so much, I still need to read the sequel to this one 🙂
